How to Clean Mold in Tile Grout

Different Methods Using Bleach and Baking Soda

What Is the Black Stuff in My Shower?

Few things are less inviting or relaxing than a shower or bath with mold in the grout. Today, we’re taking a look at two main cleaning products you can use to clean mold in tile grout—and you probably already have them at home.

How to Clean Mold in Tile Grout

Bleach

Bleach is the most effective method for removing mold from shower grout.

  • Method One: Make a solution of one-part bleach and four-parts water, and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the affected area and scrub with a brush after 30 minutes. Rinse with water and repeat if necessary.
  • Method Two: Using a toothbrush and undiluted bleach, scrub directly into moldy grout and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse with water and repeat if there is still mold remaining.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a popular cleaning product around your entire house. You can use it to safely clean mold, even though it isn’t always as effective as bleach.

  • Method One: Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with one gallon of water, and put the solution in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to the affected area, and let it sit for half an hour. Then rinse the surface with warm water.
  • Method Two: Put baking soda on a damp sponge and scrub the tile and grout. Then rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary.
  • Method Three: Create a paste with baking soda and water, and spread it directly over the grout. Wait 10 minutes and then scrub with a brush and rinse.
