How to Get the Boat Ready for the Season

boat cleaning

Summers on the water can be exciting and relaxing, especially when your boat is fresh, clean, and running like a dream. Use the following boat prep and cleaning tips to help get your vessel ready for the season.

Boat inspection checklist

Even if your boat was sitting in dry storage over the winter, you still want to check to make sure all systems are working properly.

  • Inspect the hull for cracks, blisters, or damage that occurred over winter.
  • Change the motor oil, oil filter, gear lube, and fuel-water separators. If you didn’t fog the engine before storing, inspect the spark plugs.
  • Check hoses for cracking, wear, or loose clamps.
  • Clean the battery terminals, check the fluid levels, and fully charge the batteries. Make sure they can hold a charge before your first trip.
  • Verify that your bilge pump and automatic float switch are working properly so you can easily pump out any built up moisture.
  • Test the electronics: Turn on the VHF radio, GPS, and navigation lights to check for cracked wiring or failures before leaving the dock.
  • Run the engine out of the water using earmuffs (motor flushes) with the water fully turned on. Verify water is exiting the cooling port and check that all dash gauges are functioning.
  • If you trailer your boat, grease the wheel bearings, check tire pressure, inspect winch straps, and test the lights.

Just like you would inspect your car before a road trip, your boat should be thoroughly checked before it goes back on the water. The marina where you dock and launch the boat may also have other required checks, preparation tips, and guidance.

Cleaning your boat inside and out

While you may have washed off the salt water and last season’s dirt and grime before storing your boat, it needs another bath before your first voyage.

  • Use marine-safe soap to help prevent polluting the waterways.
  • Apply a fresh coat of wax to help protect against UV damage.
  • Clean interior upholstery and look for any signs of mold or mildew
  • Wash life jacks, water toys, and any other accessories left on the boat over winter.

Like a car, freshening the interior and exterior of the boat not only helps keep it running smoothly, but the clean environment also enhances your experience.

Staying safe on the water

Once your boat has been cleaned and inspected, there are a few more vital steps before setting sail.

  • Restock safety items, including a first aid kit, flares, and fire extinguishers
  • Review any additional coast guard requirements and make sure you’re in compliance.
  • Double check that your boat’s registration is up-to-date.
  • Top off with fresh fuel.

Preparing your boat for the season is a multi-step process, but it’s all in the name of safety and comfort, so you can enjoy your time out on the water without worrying about water on your boat.
