Basement Cleaning Tips

Four Steps to a Less Scary Space

basement cleaning tips

How often do you venture into the basement? It’s one area of the home that’s often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. It may be underutilized if it’s not finished. The creaky steps and lack of lighting could also be considered creepy. But whatever the reason, cleanliness counts, especially if it’s a storage room. Here are some basement cleaning tips to help overcome the spooky stigma of the space.

Basement Cleaning Tips

Whether your basement is finished or not, it’s still an area that’s prone to dust, dirt, and grime. Left unclean and unchecked, this is an ideal spot for pests to gather and bacteria to build up. The chances of mold also increase if the space is not properly waterproofed. To help keep things fresh and organized, there’s an easy four-step process to properly cleaning a basement.

  1. Declutter.
    • Sort items by what you want to keep, sell, donate, or discard.
    • If the area is already packed with storage, take it section by section.
    • Clear the space quicker by starting with large items you know you want to get rid.
    • Keep in mind, if it’s being stored in the basement, do you really need to keep it?
      • If you haven’t used it in a year, it’s time to say goodbye.
  2. Clean. This may be easier if the area is cleared out first.
    • Thoroughly clean from top to bottom.
      • Start with the cobwebbed corners and high shelves.
      • Wash dusty walls and windows.
      • Finish by mopping floors, even concrete.
      • Make sure everything is fully dry before you move items back in.
    • While you’re scrubbing, notice cracks and crevices that need patching or signs of water damage.
    • Replace any air filters and clean vents and ducts.
  3. Organize what you’ll be keeping into plastic, watertight bins that are easily stackable and clearly labeled.
    • Group similar items, such as seasonal tools and holiday decor.
  4. Maintain the clean, decluttered space.
    • Regularly dust and vacuum.
    • Check monthly for moisture and mold.

Once your basement is clean and organized, you may just find another quaint living space, or at least an area that doesn’t creep you out as much.
