How to Winterize a Patio

Why Fall is the Time to Start

Even though the days are still warm and the nights bring a cozy chill to your outdoor spaces, it’s a good time to start thinking about winter. The next time you’re snuggled around the fire pit or enjoying an early sunset on the deck, you can slowly begin to winterize your patio.

Why Should You Winterize a Patio

Even if you still like to gather around your outdoor space in the winter, there are certain tasks that can help keep the area clean and properly maintained. Here’s why winterizing a patio is a good idea:

  • Prevent leaves and debris from staining patio surface and producing mold.
  • Protect outdoor furniture and cushions from damage.
  • Help prolong the life of patio or deck materials.

While the techniques used to clean depends on what your patio and furniture is made of, there’s a general list of tasks to keep in mind for all outdoor spaces.

Patio Winterizing Tasks

From clearing and cleaning to sealing and storing, preparing your patio for winter helps to protect it from harsh weather damage. Here are some steps to follow.

  1. Clean and store the furniture. Follow any manufacturer’s instructions on how to properly clean your outdoor tables, chairs, and cushions. Once they’re completely dry, store them in a garage or shed if possible. You can also use waterproof, UV-resistant covers to store them outside if necessary.
  2. Clear the area. Remove any decorative items and potted plants.
  3. Clean the patio. Once all the furniture and decor is put away, it’s easier to clean an empty space. Sweep loose debris and dirt. Then power wash to clean stubborn grime.
  4. Inspect for cracks and damage. Small cracks in concrete can expand through the freezing and thawing cycles of winter. Look for gaps between pavers and worn sealant on wood decks and repair where needed.
  5. Apply protective sealant. Use the appropriate product for your wood, concrete, or paver patio to help block moisture from seeping into the surface.

Another way of winterizing is by enclosing the patio. Glass and vinyl panels and outdoor curtains can block wind and retain heat inside a screened-in area. Installing permanent plastic or glass walls to fully enclose the space also extends your living area to make it more comfortable during the winter.
