Summer is a popular time for backyard gatherings and group activities. But if you’re not careful, you could be inviting bacteria to the party. Here are some hot tips for a germ-free summer so you can celebrate the season and stay healthy.

Tips for a Germ-Free Summer

Whether you’re planning a party or attending one, there are some healthy habits to keep in mind to minimize the risk of viruses. Just because it’s not cold and flu season, germs are still attracted to high-touch surfaces. In fact, the warm, humid conditions are ideal environments for fungal growth. Plus, all that BBQ food prep in the heat can be a hotbed for bacteria. Practice the following methods before, during, and after any summer gathering.

  1. Disinfect surfaces. Regularly clean high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and countertops. Wipe up spills to keep the food areas clean throughout the party.
  2. Prevent cross-contamination. Separate raw meats from cooked foods and use different utensils and platters for each. Wash and dry fresh fruits and vegetables.
  3. Maintain proper temperature. Hot food should stay hot and cold food cold to limit the risk of bacteria. Promptly refrigerate leftovers.
  4. Stay outside. Enjoy the wide open outdoor space to limit the risk of transmitting germs.
  5. Frequent handwashing. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before eating, and after being in public spaces. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available.
  6. Properly dry off. Dry yourself and surfaces thoroughly after showering or swimming. This helps to prevent mold and mildew from forming in excess moisture.
  7. Cover coughs and sneezes. Being outdoors may still trigger allergies that spark a tickle in your nose and throat. Use a tissue or your elbow to cover up and dispose of tissues properly.
  8. Improve air quality. Use indoor air purifiers with HEPA filters and ventilate your home by opening windows.
  9. Repel insects. Prevent mosquitoes from infiltrating your home by eliminating standing water around your yard and installing screens on doors and windows. Wear protective clothing or insect repellent to limit outdoor exposure.
  10. Stay home when sick. It may be a bummer to miss a get-together, but your hosts will thank you for not spreading germs to other guests.

By combining these strategies, you can focus more of celebrating your freedom from germs while enjoying outdoor summer activities with family and friends.
