Make the Grade to Get Your Deposit Back

With the spring semester ending, many students are moving out of their campus apartment. While you may be clearing the space of belongings, you should also consider cleaning to help ensure you’ll get your security deposit back. If you’re the owner of student apartments, you definitely want to deep clean before more students move in. Here are some tips to help with the process.

Cleaning Out Before Moving Out

During the school year, there’s a lot to more to focus on than keeping an apartment clean. Spills, crumbs, and other debris are often left behind after late night study sessions. Items are forgotten behind furniture and in closets. Tiny holes in the walls could be what’s keeping you from collecting a deposit back. So when it’s time to move out, a clean out is in order. Here are the areas to focus on:

  • Kitchen. Empty the refrigerator and wipe down the interior and exterior. Clean the countertop and scrub the sink. Degrease the oven and wipe down the microwave.
  • Bathroom. Clean and disinfect the shower, tub, toilet, and sink. Focus on removing hard water stains and scrubbing the grout.
  • Bedroom. Remove all items from closets, drawers, and under the bed.

Apartments that are cleaned regularly throughout the year should be relatively easy to clean at the end of a semester. It also helps the process once you have an empty apartment to clean.

Deep Clean Student Apartments

At the very least, every room should be dusted, vacuumed, and treated for stains. For a deeper cleaning, consider the following:

  • Remove cobwebs
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Sweep and mop hard floors
  • Vacuum all carpets, rugs, and under furniture
  • Wipe down walls, baseboards, doors, and windows with a damp cloth
  • Remove nails or screws in the walls and patch holes
  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors and replace any burnt-out bulbs

Once the apartment is clear and clean, take photos of the space to document the condition. This could help with any disputes when it comes to collecting the security deposit. If possible, you may also want to consider walking through the apartment with the landlord or property manager to inspect together and address any concerns.
